Sales at John Lewis up 14.8%
Fourth week of new financial year produces revenues of £50.36 million
Sales at department store group John Lewis rose 14.8% to £50.36 million in the week to Saturday 27th February. The retailer reported double-figure increases on each day of the period bar Monday, “despite the wintry weather that lingered for branches in the north.”
Simon Russell, Head of Multi Channel, pointed out that 21 branches were ahead on the year and “online sales continued to attract plenty of new customers, recording an impressive 41% increase.”
Fashion and Home categories put in the strongest performance, both in-store and online. Electricals & Home Technology recorded “a more modest increase” – the sector rose 2.7% – with a quieter week for vision sales, but Russell commented that some excellent results were achieved in white goods and audio.
“We couldn't have wished for a better start to 2010,” he added. “I've no doubt there will be plenty of challenges in the weeks and months ahead but we are well placed to ride whatever storm we encounter.”
